A

Abbey Panels

Manufacturer of the original production run of GT40 chassis.

ACOC

AC Owners Club, the enthusiast's organization, headquartered in England, dedicated to the cars manufactured by AC Cars, Ltd.

AFB

Four-barrel carburetor made by Carter; used on 289 dual-quad set up.

Air Car

A Cobra, Shelby or GT40 or other special interest car built from scratch by someone who has legitimate claim to that serial number, either by legal ownership of major parts of a genuine car or by legitimate paperwork. Essentially a copy or replica of an original car; not a legitimate car.

Air Dam

Correct aerodynamic terminology for a front "spoiler." Usually an add-on device fitted to the lower front edge of a car to increase the high pressure area at the nose of the car. This increases downforce on the front wheels (which provides better high speed steering control) and improves cooling by preventing high pressure air from getting under the car and filling the relatively lower pressure area behind the radiator.

Airport

Shorthand for Shelby American production facility located in two large aircraft hangars on the edge of Los Angeles International Airport (address: 6501 West Imperial Highway). Shelby American outgrew its original facility in Venice and moved here in January, 1965. The facility was closed in September, 1967 and production was moved to Michigan. 1965 (after car #250), 1966 and 1967 Shelbys, later R-Models, '66 and '67 Mustang notchback racers and 427 Cobras were built at the airport facility. Shelby built all the GT40 MK IIs there, turning some over to Holman-Moody, and built their (Shelby-prepared) MK IVs there as well.

Americans

5-spoke magnesium wheels made by American racing in the 1960s. Shelby American used American's "GT" model magnesium 15"x7" as the standard wheel on the GT350 R-Model and 1966 Mustang notchback racers. American's "Torq-Thrust D" magnesium 15"x8" was used on the 1967 Trans-Am notchbacks (these wheels were also made in 8.5", 9" and 10" widths). The "Torq-Thrust" magnesium in 15"x6" size was offered as an option on the 289 Cobra; two types of hubs were used: press-fit and one which utilized a bolt-in hub (with Chevy bolt pattern). Both were held onto the spline by means of the standard Cobra two-ear chrome knockoff. American reproduced their GT wheel in 15"x7" aluminum in 1987; these wheels are often referred to as "American Repros," "R-Model Repros" or "R-Model aluminum Repros."

ARRC

American Road Race of Champions. The season's run-offs held by the Sports Car Club of America at the end of each year. Cars racing in each class accumulate points during the season and the top three finishers in each of the SCCA's six geographical areas are invited to compete against each other. The winner of each race is crowned that years National Champion. When it began in 1964, the ARRC alternated between Riverside International Raceway in California (even years) and Daytona International Speedway in Florida (odd years) until 1969, when the ARRC moved permanently to Road Atlanta in Georgia. In 1994 it was, again, permanently moved to Mid-Ohio. Beginning in 2005 it was held at Heartland Park in Kansas.

B

Berry Plastiglass

Manufacturer of limited-volume fiberglass components for Cobras, Shelbys and GT40s, such as racing bucket seats and hood scoops.

Bezel

rim or collar. Used to describe the chrome trim which goes around the outside of the taillight lens, or the chrome piece which runs around the outside of the gauge panel of the dashboard. Also used to describe the black, fiberglass pod which houses the tachometer and oil pressure gauge on top of the dashboard in 1965 GT350.

Bib Overalls

Farmer's coveralls worn by Carroll Shelby when he was racing in the 1950s. A chicken farmer, Shelby once arrived late to the track and didn't have time to remove them. When he won the race wearing them and when photographs appeared of him and the race queen, they quickly became his trademark (along with a black cowboy hat).

Big Block

Shorthand for the Ford FE family of large displacement V8s: 390, 427, and 428 cubic inch. Usually used to differentiate between similar year or type of cars or a small block (i.e. BB dual-point distributor). [See "Small Block"]

Big Letter Intake

Refers to the Cobra 4V hi-rise aluminum intake manifold used on the late 1966, 1967 and 1968 GT350s. So-called because the "COBRA" name cast into the top/front of the manifold was larger than the "COBRA" name on the same style intake used on the 1965 and early 1966 GT350s and 289 Cobra roadsters. Also called "Large Letter Intake" or "S2MS" or "S7MS" (refers to the Shelby part number prefix).

Blue Dots

Special Goodyear tires used as original equipment on 427 Cobra street cars (8.15"x15") and 1965 and early 1966 GT350s (7.75"x15"). These tires carry a raised circle of rubber on the sidewall that is blue in color and about the size of a quarter. These tires were standard equipment on 427 Cobras and '65 GT350s.

Blue Streaks

Goodyear tire model sold during the 1960s. Some were race tires carrying a single, thin blue stripe around the sidewall; some were street tires with raised white letters; some were black wall. Goodyear made this tire in several sizes, tread patterns and compounds. Race tires were called "Sports Car Specials" and others were "Stock Car Specials." Used as original equipment on some 289 Cobra roadsters, most 1966 GT350s with 14-inch wheels, and 427 Cobra competition cars.

Bondo

Plastic substance used in low-quality body-work to cover surface imperfections. After hardening and sanding it is painted, but with age it can crack and peel. Used as a negative term (i.e. "Bondo Bucket") to describe a car which has been repaired or restored quickly and cheaply.

Borrani

Wire wheel manufacturer; produced high quality wheels used on GT40s as well as other European racing an sports cars.

BRM Wheels

6-spoke magnesium wheels designed by BRM and first fitted to Gulf Mirage cars; later to Gulf GT40 and most later GT40s.

Brock Coupe

One of the updated Cobra Daytona Coupes built by Superformance in South Africa. Peter Brock refined the original specifications, creating a Daytona Coupe body that was slightly longer, slightly wider and with the roof-line he had original envisioned. The result is a Daytona Coupe with perfect proportions.

Buddy Bar

Manufacturer's name cast into the underside of original Cobra "hollow letter" aluminum valve covers. Used to describe original Cobra valve covers (used on 289 Cobras, 1965 and early 1966 GT350s) as opposed to "solid letter" Cobra aluminum valve covers (used on later 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1970 GT350s and current reproductions). Also refers to the aluminum casting company in Los Angeles that manufactured the valve covers, "Buddy Bar Casting Co." The owner's full name was Buddy Barksdale. Buddy Bar also made intake manifolds and other cast aluminum pieces for Shelby American as well as just about every other aftermarket speed equipment manufacturer in Southern California during the 1960s.

Bundle-Of-Snakes

Ford GT exhaust header system; each cylinder's pipe was the same length, resulting in a twisting and curving configuration over the transaxle, ending in two collectors and two megaphone exhausts that came out the rear. At speed it created a distinctive sound.

Bungee Cord

Woven elastic cord with plastic-coated metal hooks at each end; used to hold trunk lid secure on 289 Cobra race cars; used to tie jack, jack handle and lug nut socket together in trunk of 1965 GT350s; used to secure spare tire in rear of Cobra Daytona Coupe.

B-W

Borg Warner, manufacturer of 4-speed transmissions used in 289 Cobras and 1965-1966 GT350s. The actual model was the T-10M. [See "T-10"]

C

C-4

Ford automatic transmission used on 289 Cobras and 1966-1967-1968 GT350s.

California Car

Term used in classified ads to describe a car which came from California. Used to indicate a car is rust-free because of low humidity and because salt and sand are not used in this area of the country during the winter. Does not necessarily indicate that the car has spent its entire life in that state, only that at some point it came from there. Other sunbelt states may also be used with the same intention; i.e. Arizona, New Mexico, etc.

Can-Am

Short for "Canadian-American Challenge Series," the SCCA race series created in 1966 closed-wheel racers with unlimited displacement engines and very few other rules. This series replaced the USRRC (United States Road Racing Championship." Also known by its FIA designation of "Group 7."

Canards

Small, triangular aluminum fins riveted to either side of GT40 and Mirage noses, designed to produce aerodynamic downforce.

Carburetor

Usually described by the number of venturi (i.e. 1V, 2V, 4V). All Cobras and Shelbys used a single four-barrel carburetor (4V) as standard equipment except for the 1967 GT500 and sine 427 Cobra street cars which used a dual-quad system (2x4V). Optional intake set-ups (available through Shelby or Ford aftermarket part systems) include three two-barrels (3x2V, also called "triples," "tri-power," "three two's" or "three deuces; dual four-barrels (2x4V, also called "dual quads" or "twin quads") and four two-barrels (4x2V, Weber induction).

Carnet

French, literally "notebook." Import and export documentation accompanying cars as they were temporarily imported into countries for racing purposes.

CFM

Abbreviation for "Cubic Feet per Minute"; used to describe size of a carburetor by its maximum air flow rate. For example, 289 Cobras used a 715 CFM Holley carburetor.

Cleveland

Used to describe the 351 cubic-inch engine built in Ford's Cleveland (Ohio) engine foundry. Also called "351-C." Ford's other 351 resembles this engine in displacement only and was built in Ford's Windsor (Ontario, Canada) engine plant; thus it is referred to as a "Windsor" or "351-W" engine.

Close Ratio

Refers to gear ratios in four-speed transmissions that are spaced close together (as opposed to "Wide Ratio" gears which are spaced farther apart). Close ratios are normally preferred for road race and drag race cars; wide ratio transmissions are generally used in street cars. Close ratio transmissions were standard in all Cobras and Shelbys except 1969-1970 models where they were an option. Close ratio transmissions have a 2.32 or 2.36 1st gear (wide ratio transmissions have a 2.78 1st gear).

COB

Cobra serial number indicating these cars were intended for sale in Great Britain; were RHD cars. [See "CSX' and "COX"]

Cobra Le Mans

Cast aluminum, finned valve covers used on some 427 Cobras and on 1967 GT500. "Cobra LeMans" lettering appears on the same line. 1968 GT500 valve covers were similar, except that "LeMans" appeared under "COBRA" and the valve cover surface was black krinkle-finish.

Cobra-Lettered

Refers to "brand name" cast into aluminum engine parts such as intake manifolds, valve covers, oil pans, air cleaners, etc. May have been original equipment on completed cars or aftermarket parts sold through Shelby American's parts department (or through Ford dealers' parts departments) prior to 1967. [See "Ford Lettered" and "Shelby Lettered"]

Cobra Number

The Cobra VIN or serial number; also called "CSX number." [See "VIN"]

Coil-Over

Suspension arrangement where the coil spring and shock absorber form a single unit with the shock (or "damper") located within the center of the coil.

Coil Spring

Refers to the typed of suspension and chassis for the 427 Cobras. Also refers to 289-powered AC cars with coil spring chassis built for sale in England and Europe. Usually used to differentiate big block Cobras from small block Cobras (which used a transverse leaf spring suspension front and rear). [See "Leaf Spring"]

Cold Air Box

Aluminum box surrounding the carburetors which insulated them from the hot air surrounding the engine.

Colotti Transaxle

Combination transmission and transaxle, made in Italy, used on various rear-engined race cars including the early GT40s. The actual transmission hung off the back of the unit, to the rear of the axle housing.

Comp

Abbreviation for "competition"; used to describe race cars or special parts built originally for race cars; i.e. comp fuel cap, comp roll bar, comp hood scoop, comp fender flares, etc.

Completion Car

Term used to describe cars built after normal production ceased but are built to original specifications by the original manufacturer. The 427 S/Cs Carroll Shelby began building in 1991, which have serial numbers previously allocated by never used, are examples of completion cars because the manufacturer of record is Shelby American, Inc. which is still in operation. Completion cars are given serial numbers which fit into the numbering sequence previously established by the original production.

Component Car

Term used for the 427-specification CSX4000 and 289-specification CSX7000 and CSX8000 series car cars built by Shelby American in their Las Vegas facility. So-called because they are purchased as semi-completed rollers or as turn-key, running cars completed by franchised dealers. Available with a choice of body materials: aluminum, fiberglass, carbon fiber.

Comstock

Large Canadian construction firm which sponsored a large racing effort in the 1960s. Comstock sponsored Mustangs, GT350s, Cobras, and GT40s in a five-year effort to place Canadian motorsports in the international spotlight.

Continuation Car

Term used for cars built after normal production ceased. Such cars are built to original specifications, often using original blueprints, tooling, jigs, suppliers, fabricators and assemblers where possible. GT40 MK Vs built by Safir Engineering in the 1980s are examples of "continuation cars" because they are a continuation of production and are acknowledged as such by those responsible for the original cars (i.e. John Willment in the case of the GT40 MK V) even though they are not built under the auspices of the original company. Continuation cars are given production numbers which began after the last original serial number left off; they many be designated by a unique prefix or suffix.

Cosmetic Restoration

A general spiffing-up of a car's exterior and interior but normally not including mechanical work. Can include repainting and/or replacement of emblems, trim items, carpets, etc.

Coupe

A car of closed bodywork configuration, such as a Cobra Daytona Coupe or GT40 coupe. The opposition of an open car or roadster.

COX

Cobra serial number prefix indicating those cars intended for export Great Britain but not to the U. S.; were LHD cars. [See "CSX" and "COB"]

CS Logo

Carroll Shelby trademark consisting of an "S" inside of a "C," appearing as a two-lane road with checkered flags at the top. Used on wheel centers and gauges of some production Shelbys. Used to replace "COBRA" name on aftermarket parts after 1967 (as per Carroll Shelby's agreement with Ford Motor Company following their purchase of the Cobra name in 1967). Sometimes "CS" symbol was followed by the name "SHELBY."

CSX

Cobra serial number prefix indicating those cars built for Shelby American and intended for shipment to the U.S.. Four-digit sequential production number follows the prefix (2000 series for 260-289 leaf spring cars and 3000 series for 427-428 coil spring cars). "CSX" is widely thought to stand for "Carroll Shelby Export," but this is a common misconception. When the first AC Aces were built in 1954, they had four or five-character serial numbers. The first two characters were letters, followed by a two or three digit production number. An "A" was used to denote this new series of cars, followed by the letter "E." Cars which were left-hand drive and built for export received a third prefix letter "X." In 1956, when the Bristol engine replaced the AC engine, the prefixes were changed to "BE" and "BEX." When AC Cars got the Shelby American contract for the Cobras, they considered this car the third in their series of AC Ace derivatives, so they used a "C" prefix, which many people assumed stood for "Cobra," or "Carroll." The letters might have fit but this was actually nothing more than a coincidence. AC was merely continuing the numbering system they had been using since 1954. The second letter in the prefix, an "S," did stand for Shelby and the third letter, "X," denoted left hand drive cars for export. [See "VIN"]

Cutback Doors

Describes certain Cobra roadster competition models (5 FIA and 11 USRRC cars) which had a concave shape to the rear edge of the doors (to accept larger rear fender flares).

D

Damper

Thick, circular disc mounted on the front of the crankshaft, used to check vibration of the crankshaft; size of the damper on 289 High-Performance engine is unique and is one of the ways to differentiate Hi-Po engines from standard (also called "Lo-Po") engines. Occasionally incorrectly referred to as a "dampner."

Daytona Coupe

Special model of the original Cobra built in coupe configuration for FIA race events in 1964 and 1965. Designed by Peter Brock; only 6 made.

Dealer-Installed

Refers to parts or options installed by the original dealer prior to the car's sale--as opposed to those parts being installed by the factory prior to shipment to the dealer.

Dealer Option

Refers to an option installed by the dealer prior to the car's sale or delivery. May or may not have also been available from the factory as an option.

Demonstrator

A car set aside by the dealer (or by the factory) to be used as a test vehicle by prospective buyers. Such cars were normally sold as used cars after a short period of such use. Cars in the Shelby American factory pool were normally kept for six months before being sold. Also called a "Demo."

Dragonsnake

Special model Cobra built for drag racing. Three small blocks and one big block have been documented as having been built by Shelby American.

Dry Deck

Term used to denote engines with no water passages in the cylinder head. This eliminates the engine's common weak link of the cylinder head gasket.

Drysump

Engine oiling system which holds oil in a reservoir or tank until it is pumped into the engine. Once it moves through the engine's oiling system it is scavenged by an external pump and returned to the tank. Used on a handful of 427 competition Cobras and on GT40s. [See "Wet Sump"]

Dual-Plane

Intake manifold design where air/fuel mixture is channeled to intake ports on two different levels, permitting larger runners and greater flow. This design was used on all Cobra and Shelby aluminum Hi-Rise intake manifolds.

Dual Quads

Special intake set-up consisting of manifold carrying two four-barrel carburetors. Standard on 1967 GT500 and some 427 Cobra street cars. Also called "2x4V set-up." [See "Carburetor"]

E

Early

Refers to the beginning of a model's production when specifications may differ from those later in the production run.

Ecurie

French for "stable." Used in international racing to denote a team, such as "Ecurie Ford France." [See "Scuderia"]

Escutcheon

Formal name for a plastic cap used in the center of Cobra and 1965 GT350 steering wheels. 289 Cobras carried "AC" logo; 427 Cobras and GT350s carried around "Cobra" snake logo. Also called "Steering Wheel Center Cap" or "Center Cap."

F

Factory

Refers to original equipment in place o the car when it was delivered from the factory. Can also refer to the same style or type as the original equipment (i.e. "factory exhaust system" may refer to a car's having its original exhaust system still in place or it may refer to a replacement exhaust that is made to the same specifications as the original, installed in the same way and in the same location as the original).

Factory Equipment

Used to describe equipment or parts which were available from the factory. In the case of Shelby American, which had an extensive aftermarket parts business at the same time new cars were being sold, some items which were available through the catalog could have theoretically been installed on a car by the factory before delivery or by the dealer prior to sale. In actual fact (based on factory sales invoices), very few Cobras were shipped to dealers with additional equipment not listed on specification sheets as factory options.

Factory Options

Equipment or items listed on the dealer specification sheet for a particular model. Does not include items available through Shelby American's mail order parts department.

Factory Pool

A group of cars used by the factory for individual employee transportation, demonstrator or public relations purposes. New models were usually kept in this pool for six months and then replaced. The "old" cars were sold as used cars through Shelby dealers.

FAV

Shorthand for Ford Advanced Vehicles. A subdivision of Ford of England located in Slough, England where the early GT40s were built and prepared for racing.

FE

Ford term used to describe big block family of engines including 390, 427 and 428 cubic-inch V8s. Also called "Big Blocks."

FIA

Federation Internationale de l'Automobile. The worldwide sanctioning body, based in Paris, France, for all types of automobile racing; sanctions events, establishes and enforces rules. Also used to describe a special homologated competition model of the 289 Cobra roadster which had unique features and was built to compete in FIA points events for the World Championship.

Filipinetti

Swiss billionaire who sponsored international race teams from the 1950s through his death in 1973. Count Georges Filipinetti also imported Shelby and Ford cars under the banner of his "Performance Cars" dealership in Geneva.

Firm

Used in classified ads to indicate price is not negotiable.

Five-Spoke Wheel

Usually describes the standard 15"x7" wheel used on some Cobras. Also used on GT350 R-Models. [See "Americans"]

Flip-Top

The special, one-off modified Cobra light-weight prototype race car (CSX2196) created by Ken Miles. Powered by a 390 CID all aluminum prototype V8 based on Ford's 427 big block engine. So-called because one-piece nose/fender section flipped forward for engine/front end access and one-piece rear section flipped back to expose rear end/rear suspension.

Ford GT

Also called "Ford GT40" or "GT40"; Ford's long-distance endurance sports racer which won the 24-Hours of Lemans in 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969. So-named because it was 40-inches high; built between 1964 and 1969; models include MK I, MK II, MK III, MK IV.

Ford-Lettered

Refers to the "brand name" cast into the front/top of the aluminum hi-rise 4V intake manifold made to the same specifications as the "COBRA" intake but sold through Ford's aftermarket parts program. Not used as original equipment on Shelbys. [See "Cobra Lettered"]

Frame-Off Restoration

Used to describe a total restoration where the body is removed from the frame during the disassembly stage. Used to infer that the restoration was total; everything which could be removed from the car was prior to reassembly.

Frame-On Restoration

Used to describe a total restoration where the car is disassembled as completely as possible, all parts are repaired, repainted or rebuilt, and then reassembled to original specification.

Fully-Vented Spare

GT40 panel to the rear of the radiator covering the spare tire in the nose, with a large, single air outlet. Initially used on big block MK II cars, later fitted to small-block Gulf and later GT40s.

G

Gennie

Shorthand for "genuine"; refers to parts made by the original manufacturer during the time the cars were being made. Not reproduction parts made by some other manufacturer or parts remade by the original manufacturer at some later date.

Glass

Short for "fiberglass."

Ground-Up Restoration

Refers to a total, frame-up restoration.

GT40 Heads

Rare, special racing cylinder heads designed for the small block engine used in the Ford GT40 MK I. Unique casting (carrying "C6FE" identification) with larger ports and combustion chambers.

GT40 Valves

Larger diameter valves (1.875" intake and 1.625" exhaust) made for use with GT40 heads. Can also be used in stock Hi-Po heads but require machining and are of questionable benefit without major head reworking.

Gulf-Spec

Term used to describe cars built to the configuration of the J.W.A./Gulf racers, nominally having a fully-vented spare tire cover, BRM wheels, Gurney-Westlake 302 engine and wide rear bodywork.

Gurney Bubble

Also called "Gurney Bump" or "Gurney Bulge." Formed dome covering a hole cut in the roof of GT40s and MK IVs to provide additional helmet clearance for tall drivers. So named because Dan Gurney was one of the first drivers to require this; was later fitted to many privateer GT40s.

Gurney-Weslake Heads

Special, limited production aluminum cylinder heads for Ford small block engines. Designed by Harry Weslake and produced and sold by Dan Gurney's All American Racers. Considered the ultimate in small block heads; never used by Shelby American on any of their production or competition cars. Used in Ford GTs at LeMans in 1698 and 1696.

H

Halibrand

Manufacturer of magnesium wheels used as original equipment on Cobra competition cars. Halibrand manufactured a variety of magnesium wheels for race cars of all kinds in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Shelby American chose three basic style, in various widths and back-spacing and requiring pin-drive hubs. The styles used on Cobras are referred to as "Kidney Bean," "FIA 6-spoke" and "Cobra II." Halibrands were fitted to competition GT40s (replacing Borrani wire wheels used on early care cars). Were also occasionally used on GT40 road cars and often used by owners to replace the wire wheels.

Headers

Steel tube exhaust manifolds, used in place of stock, cast iron units, which are heavier and more restrictive. [See "Tri-Ys"]

Hi-Performance Motors

Dealership in Los Angeles and later in El Segundo owned by Carroll Shelby and Lew Spencer between 1965 and 1967. Used as a factory outlet for Cobra sales and to sell used GT350s and factory demonstrators, PR cars and pool cars. Also did customer race preparation, sponsored by Shelby American factory racers and sold GT40s.

Hi-Po

Short for "Hi-Performance"; used to describe Ford's 289 cubic-inch 271 horsepower V8 engine which was the standard engine in 289 street Cobras, 1965, 1966 and 1967 GT350s. Shelby rated GT350 engines at 306 H. P. with special intake manifold, carburetor and exhaust headers. Also used to describe special parts used in this engine. [See "K Car"]

Hi-Rise

Refers to the dimension of an intake manifold which determines how high the carburetor sits. When Hi-Rise is related to the small block engine it refers specifically to the aluminum 4V intake configuration (either "COBRA," "SHELBY," or "FORD" lettered). When related the FE engines, Hi-Rise can refer to intake manifold configuration or to cylinder heads--which also determine the height of the carburetor. The other FE heads are described as "Low-Rise" and "Medium Rise."

Holley

Manufacturer of 4-barrel carburetors used on some Cobras and Shelbys.

Hollow-Letter

Refers to Cobra aluminum valve covers used on 289 Cobras, 1965 and early 1966 GT350s. "COBRA" letters on these valve covers are cast with only borders around the letters.

Holman-Moody

NASCAR racing team founded by John Holman and Ralph Moody, brought on-board by Ford to field a second team of GT40 MK II racers.

Homologate

The process of making a new model production legal for FIA sanctioned events. Requires manufacturers to submit a concise list of specifications to which a series of cars are then built. Prior to receiving homologation a manufacturer was required to build a predetermined number of cars to insure that the new model was not a special, one-off racer being constructed to outperform existing homologated production cars. Once homologated, a manufacturer was not allowed to make any changes during the year of homologation. The FIA's competition board was thus (theoretically) able to offer all manufacturers a level playing field.

Honeycomb

Structural material made up of (usually) aluminum; thin sheets of aluminum are stamped in a corrugated shape and then bonded to each other, resulting in material with a hexagonal-shaped, open cell cross section. So named because of its similarity to bee or wasp nesting cells. Extremely strong on compression (crush); used in the manufacture of Ford "J" and MK IV chassis.

I

ID Plate

Also known as "chassis plate," "chassis tag," or "ID tag." A small photo-etched plate, usually aluminum, onto which the car's chassis number (and occasionally other information) was stamped or engraved. Usually mounted on the firewall, footbox, or on an engine compartment panel.

Impact

Manufacturer of the 3" competition seat belts used on Cobras and some 1966 GT350s.

Indy Engine

255 cu. in. (some sources say 256 cu. in.) V8 version of the Ford small-block 260/289 engine developed for use in the early Lotus Indy cars. Fitted into the first handful of GT40s as built by F.A.V. and later replaced by 289 Cobra race engines when Shelby American began racing the GT40s.

J

J-Car

Prototype and forerunner of the Ford GT40 MK IV, so-named because it was built to conform to the FIA's Appendix J rules. Also called "the Breadvan."

J.W.A.

Abbreviation for J.W. Automotive Engineering (sometimes referred to as J.W.A.E.); company formed by John Wyer, John Willment and John Horsman. They purchased the assets of F.A.V. in 1967 to race the Gulf GT40s and continue construction of GT40s after 1/1/1967. "JWA" and "JWAE" are commonly used abbreviations and both appear with equal frequency in both period and current-day publications. Contrary to popular misconception, J.W. Automotive was the proper name of the firm and was not an abbreviation for John Wyer Automotive or John Willment Automotive.

K

Kar Kraft

Ford facility in Brighton, MI where Ford built race cars and special projects which require their supervision. Ford GT40 MK IVs and Boss 429 Mustangs were made there and some race preparation was done. Sometimes referred to derisively by Shelby team members as "Kiddie Kar."

Kelsey-Hays

Sometimes referred to as "K-H;" manufacturer of wheel and brake components used by Ford Motor Company.

K-Engine

Ford's engine code "K" for the 289 cubic-inch 271 horsepower Hi-Performance ("Hi-Po") small block V8 as used in the 289 Cobra. This code was used for the optional 271 H.P. engine in 1960s era Mustangs, Comets and Fairlanes. It was the base engine for all 1965, 1966 and 1967 GT350s. "K-Car" describes a car which was originally equipped with this engine and thus, has a "K" engine code in its serial number.

King Cobra

Shelby-built sports racer based on Cooper Monaco model and powered by a 289 Cobra competition engine. Four were built in 1963; four were built in 1964.

Kit Car

Any of the fiberglass-bodied (and occasionally aluminum bodied) Cobra look-alikes, either sold in kit form or as completed turn-key cars. Also called "Cobra Replicas" although the term replica is inaccurate because these cars are not exact replicas of the original Cobra as they have different chassis, suspension, steering, etc.

Klik Pins

Over-center-ringed hood pins used on race cars to hold the hood closed. Consists of a post which comes through the bodywork and a removable pin which goes through a hole in the post, holding the bodywork secure below it. Some pins were two-piece, with the ring rotating 180° to lock over the post; other pins were one-piece and used spring tension to prevent the pin from backing out (sometimes called an "R-pin" because of it's "R" shape). Standard equipment on 1965, 1966 and 1967 Shelbys. Also used on various race cars.

Knock-Offs

The threaded hubs which hold the wheels on a Cobra spindle. Cobras with wire wheels and American 5-spoke wheels used chrome 2-eared knock-offs; early Cobra competition cars used 3-eared knock-offs; later 289 competition cars and all 427 Cobras used 3-prong knock-offs.

Koni Shocks

Heavy duty, adjustable shock absorbers made in the Netherlands. Original equipment on 1965 and early 1966 GT350s; optional on other Shelbys and Cobras.

L

Lanyard

Thin braided cable coated with clear or green plastic and a swaged stainless end, used to insure that the hood klik pins did not get lost. One end was fitted to the over-center-ring on the klik pin and the other was riveted to the car's body panel or substructure. Used on R-Models, later 1966 and 1967 Shelbys.

Large Letter Intake

Late

Refers to the end of a model's production when specifications may differ from earlier in the production run. [See "Early"]

Leaf Spring

Refers to the transverse leaf spring suspension and chassis used for 260-289 Cobras. Used to differentiate small block Cobras from big block Cobras which all used coil spring suspension and chassis. [See "Coil Spring"]

LeMans Bowls

Refers to unique fuel bowls on Holley 715 and 780 CFM carburetors; they extended out father than normal, thus making the carburetor look longer.

LeMans Cam

Ford aftermarket high performance camshaft (part no. C7FE-6250-A) often used in modified 289 Hi-Po engines. Produces lumpy idle and high RPM power but is less than ideal for street cars.

LeMans Car

Special Cobra competition roadster model built for 1963 LeMans 24-Hour race. Two were produced.

LeMans Replica

Special Cobra competition roadster model with removable hardtop, built in 1963; similar to the LeMans cars but not identical. Six produced. Originally given this name at Shelby American but die to the confusion resulting from the dozens of Cobra replicas currently on the market, this name has been dropped. These cars are now referred to as "LeMans cars."

LeMans Nose

Name applied to the definitive GT40 nose, designed by Len Bailey. So named because the first appearance of this nose was at the 1967 LeMans race.

LeMans Stripes

Twin, over-the-top stripes used on Cobra race cars. Also optional (factory or dealer installed) on 1965 and 1966 GT350s and a dealer option on 1967 and 1968 Shelbys.

LeMans Suitcase

Box, usually constructed of lightweight aluminum, made to a FIA-mandated size and carried aboard GT40s running at LeMans to satisfy the requirement that the cars racing in the Grand Touring class be able to carry a specified amount of stimulated luggage.

List Number

Manufacturer's identification or part number on Holley carburetors. Holley carburetors which were original equipment may also carry a Ford part number in addition to the Holley list number.

LHD

Left-hand drive; steering wheel is on the left side of the cockpit.

Lo-Po

Any Ford 289 cubic-inch V8 engine other than the 271 horsepower Hi-Performance (Hi-Po) version. May also refer to any standard 289 (non Hi-Po) engine part.

Low-Rise

[See "Hi-Rise"]

Lucas

The English company which manufactures electrical components. They supplied AC cars with wiring harnesses and electrics for the early Cobras. They also produced fog lights on some 1968 Shelbys and all 1969-1970 Shelbys. Lucas is also derisively referred to as "The Prince of Darkness" because of the abnormally high failure rate of its components. [See "Marchal"]

M

Magnaflux

Method of finding cracks or imperfections in ferrous metal. The piece in question is coated with oiled iron filings and then magnetized. When viewed under a black light cracks not visible to the naked eye are observable. Connecting rods, spindles, A-arms, steering rods, axles and wheels are commonly magnafluxed on a regular basis during race preparation. [See "Zyglow"]

Mag Wheels

Mag is short for magnesium, an extremely lightweight metal alloy used in making wheels for race cars. Manufacturers like Shelby offered wheels that looked like real magnesium racing wheels as options and although these wheels were made out of aluminum, steel or a combination of the two, the term "mag wheel" has come to mean any fancy wheel that looks like a racing wheel, no matter what kind of material it is made from.

Mathwall

Mathwall Engineering , Ltd.; firm started by Stuart Mathieson who is well known in Europe for building very reliable small-block race engines. He previously worked for Alan Mann Racing in the 1960s and supplied small-block engines for most of the Safir GT40 MK V cars.

McCluskey Coupes

Cobra Daytona Coupe replicas built by Mike McCluskey in Torrance, CA. These cars are exact reproductions of the original and are built on either original small block Cobra chassis (which use their original CSX2xxx serial numbers) or reproduction chasses (which use numbers CSX2604 and higher)

Meatball

Large circle painted on most race cars. Used to provide contrast so the numbers inside the meatball can be easily seen. Also referred to as a "target" or "roundel."

Medium-Rise

[See "Hi-Rise"]

Mint

Used in classified ads to describe a car that is unusually clean or in exceptionally good condition with no owner modifications (i.e. as in "minted" at the factory). May or may not be used to denote originality. An over-used term.

Mirage

Lightweight GT40-based derivative, designed by J.W.A. using a GT40 chassis and narrowed cockpit. Three were built and they raced only in 1967. One crashed and was scrapped; one survives; and the third was converted into a Gulf GT40. Proper designation is "Mirage M1" as J.W.A. also built Mirage M2 and Mirage M3 vehicles in later years--neither of which were in any way connected to the GT40.

MK I

Designation used by AC Cars to differentiate between Cobra models. MK I referred to the early worm-and-sector leaf spring Cobras. MK II referred to rack-and-pinion steering leaf spring Cobras. MK III referred to the coil spring chassis Cobras. Also used to differentiate GT40 models. KI I being the small block racing and road versions.

MK II

GT40 model powered by a 427 Ford V8. Built in two variants (referred to as "MK I-A" and "MK II-B"). Won LeMans in 1966.

MK III

GT40 street model, powered by a 289 V8. Only 7 made; most GT40 street cars were built as MK I models (built as race or road versions).

MK IV

Ford GT race cars built for 1967 LeMans; powered by a Ford 427 V8. Won LeMans in 1967. Only 12 tubs produced; eight cars initially completed for LeMans. Also used to describe coil spring Cobra-style cars built by Brian Angliss' AC Autokraft in the late 1980s-early 1990s, referred to as "AC MK IVs."

MK V

GT40 "continuation cars" built in the 1980s to original specifications by Safir engineering in England. Used original blueprints and tooling, and some of the original fabricators and craftsman were involved in the project.

Monocoque

Vehicle construction technique where the internal structure and skin are one in the same. Differs from a space frame construction where an internal skeleton or framework is covered with non-structural skin (i.e. a Cobra). GT40 construction is semi-monocoque in that the chasses and roof structure are one unit; the roof performs part of the load-carrying structure.

Monza Fuel Cap

Competition 3 1/2" diameter snap-open aluminum fuel filler used on Cobra and GT350 race cars.

N

NASCAR

National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing, the sanctioning body for stock car racing in the U.S. Also Used to describe the Ford 427 cubic-inch engine used in stock cars in the mid-1960s.

NOS

Classified ad abbreviation for "New Old Stock." Describes parts produced by the original manufacturer during a time that they were originally manufactured, but never used on a car. May be further described as being "still in the box" which means just that.

O

OBO

Classified ad abbreviation standing for "Or Best Offer." Indicates someone isn't sure what their car or parts are really worth but they don’t want to take the chance of pricing them too low. They list a price and add "OBO" after so as not to scare off potential buyers who may not want to pay that much and may be willing to negotiate.

OEM

Original Equipment Manufacturer. Abbreviation used to designate original parts specified by the original manufacturer, made by a subcontractor and used on a particular car during it manufacture. For example, the 8.15"x15" Goodyear Blue Dot tire was the OEM tire on the 427 street Cobra.

Oil Cooler

An oil radiator, usually found on most race cars. Sometimes mounted near or attached to the water radiator, oil running through it is cooed. Standard equipment on 427 Cobra competition and S/C models, 1965 GT350 R-Models, GT500KRs with air conditioning and 1969-1970 GT500s with automatic transmissions and the Drag Pack option.

Oil Cooler Scoop

The oblong cut-out below the grille opening on most 427 Cobras designed to let air into - and through - the car's oil cooler. Most street 427 Cobras did not have oil coolers.

Original

Means that a part is the very same one that was on that particular car when it was manufactured. A car that has 0 miles and has never been driven would still have its original tires, battery, oil filter and spark plugs. Often misused to indicate a part Is of the same type as the one originally used during manufacture. [See "Original Style"]

Original Condition

Refers to a car that has not been restored, repainted, etc. Does no necessarily have to be in "mint" condition. Frequently misused to describe "restored to original" cars.

Original Style

Means that a part is the same style or kind as was used on the car originally. Does not mean that this part is the very same one used on that particular car on the day it was manufactured. For example, a 289 Cobra which had it's original painted wire wheels replaced with chrome wire wheels, no longer has the original wheels that came on that car, but it does have "original style" wheels which came on other Cobras. Also used to describe items which have been reproduced to original specifications.

P

Paper Clip Roll Bar

Slang term for the common Cobra single loop roll bar (289 forward-braced or 427 rear-braced). [See "Roll-Over Bar"]

Paxton

Paxton centrifugal supercharger, named after its creation, Robert Paxton McCullough, offered as an option on 1966, 1967 and 1968 GT350s. Also offered as an aftermarket kit for use on small-block Cobras. The Paxton supercharger is a derivative of the original McCullough supercharger. It used a special "Cobra" of "Shelby" lettered air box. Increased horsepower to 390. Name also refers to any parts unique to this installation, such as the special Paxton logo air pressure and manifold pressure under-dash gauges.

Plaza Fiberglass

Canadian fiberglass firm that produced bodywork for GT40 MK II cars. Also, later supplied 1967 Shelby fiberglass hoods and trunk lids.

Plenum

Any sealed enclosure designed to keep usually warmer ambient air outside. On 427 Cobra competition and S/C cars, an aluminum bowl-like enclosure (also called a "turkey pan") which surrounds the carburetor. Also used on top of the carburetors on 1965 GT350 R-Models. Usually positioned beneath the hood scoop; used to insure that cold, outside air coming through the hood scoop is ducted directly into the carburetor and not mixed with the hot air from the engine compartment. [See "Ram-Air"]

Plexi

Short for plexiglass

Police Interceptor

A high performance derivative of the 390 and 428 FR engines. Sometimes abbreviated as P.I.

PR Car

A car used by the factory for public relations; loaned to automotive journalists, VIPs, celebrities, high visibility individuals, etc.

Privateer

Term used to denote a car raced by a private individual or team (as opposed to a factory or manufacturer's entry). Generally applied to a single-man operation.

Prototype

The early forerunner of a standard model; an idea car on which a production car would be based. Prototypes were often hand-built, one-of-a-kind cars which were not always followed up with production versions. Prototype parts served the same purpose; they were often used to test pieces and/or determine specifications for production pieces.

Q

Quick-Fill Cap

[See "Monza Cap"]

Quick Jack Pads

The notched plates fitted to competition Cobras which replaced the from and rear bumpers. During pit stops, lever-type jacks would be placed in the notches to raise the cars quickly.

R

Rack-and-Pinion

The type of steering on a Cobra MK II (all Cobras after #2125); replaced the imprecise worm-and-sector type steering used on earlier cars. [See "Worm-and-Sector"]

Ragtop

Convertible.

Ram-Box

Intake manifold design where air/fuel mixture from the carburetor flows into a large, open cavity in the manifold and is pulled into individual intake ports by the vacuum created by the opening of the calves and down stroke of the pistons. Permits the largest amount of air/fuel mixture to flow into combustion chambers; used primarily on drag race engines. Aluminum "Shelby-lettered" ram-box intake for small blocks was offered as an aftermarket item by Shelby's parts company in 1968-1969. It featured two separate (removable) tops - one for 1x4V and one 2x4V. Was never a stock piece or an option on Shelby models.

Ray Brown

The manufacturer of the 3-in. wide competition seat belts used on cobras and 1965-1966 GT350s. Similar belts also manufactured by American Safety Co. and used on some Cobras and early GT350s.

Raydyot

English manufacturer of the small, bullet-shaped spun aluminum competition outside mirrors used on most Cobra race cars.

Rev-Limiter

Electronic device which short-circuits the ignition system when the pre-set RPM limit is reached.

Remote Oil Filter

Part of the oil cooler system for competition Cobras and R-Models. The oil filter mounting surface on the engine block becomes the inlet/outlet for hoses running to the oil radiator; so a separate oil filter mounting bracket is used, which is plumbed into the system (usually between the block and the oil radiator). The mounting bracket is usually attached to the block or the inner fender panel.

Replica

An exact copy of the original. When referring to Cobras, should not be confused with "kit-cars" which only resemble the originals on the outside. An actual replica will use the same parts as the original and be built to essentially the same specifications. [See LeMans Replica]

Repro

Short for "reproduction." A part which is no longer available and has been re-manufactured (more or less to the original specifications). Sometimes called a "re-pop."

Restored

Brought back to the original condition (or better) using original, original-type or reproduction parts.

RHD

Right-hand drive; steering wheels is on the right side of the cockpit.

Riverside

Road race circuit in Riverside, California (no longer active) where Shelby American tested its cars. Also used by Carroll Shelby School of High Performance Driving. Also the name of early Cobra competition models ("Riverside car" and "Riverside Replica").

Roadster

A 2-seat car of open bodywork configuration, such as a 289 Cobra.

Roadster Pan

Cast aluminum "Cobra-lettered" oil pan designed for Cobra roadsters. Does not have "T" shape of GT350 pan ("T-pan" will not fit between Cobra's fram rails).

Roll Bar

Common term for "anti-roll bar;" a stiff bar connecting the outer axles or spindles to the chassis with provides tension and thereby shows the rate of movement during suspension travel. Also (incorrectly) called "Sway Bar" - actually an anti-sway bar.

Roll Cage

A system of braces attached to the roll bar which form a rectangular cage around the driver, offering increased protection in the event of a roll-over. Also has the effect of stiffening the chassis.

Roller

Term used to describe a car without an engine or transmission but with front and rear suspension (so it can be rolled around).

Roller Cam

Cam and lifter system using rollers where contact is made with the cam lobes. Provides increased RPMS and increased horsepower. Not legal in SCCA racing in the 1960s; referred to by the factory with a wink as a "helper kit"

Roller Rockers

Rocker arms which employ cylindrical roller bearings at the ends, where they contact the push rod and valve stem; they make higher RPMs possible by reducing friction in the valve train. First offered in 1969 on Boss 302 Trans-Am engines; were never original or stock on Cobras or Shelbys.

Roll-Over Bar

Often incorrectly referred to as a "roll bar," a hollow tube, usually bent in an inverted "U" and attached to the chassis behind the driver's seat (usually with one or more rearward or forward braces) to provide protection for the driver in the event the vehicle rolls over.

Rotisserie

Large rotating fixture which bolts

Roundel

Round number circles, normally in colors contrasting to the car, which carry large numbers. Also called "meatball" or "roundel."

Running Lights

Side marking lights used to illuminate race numbers on cars that race at night (LeMans, Daytona, etc.). There was no specific part numbed for these; race teams used whatever hardware they could find which suited their needs. Stock Cobra license plate lights were used on some Cobras due to their immediate availability.

RWL

Refers to raised white letters on the sidewalls of tires.

S

S/C

427 Cobra Semi-Competition model (sometimes called "Street-Competition"); model designated by the factory to describe those competition 427 Cobras with sufficiently detuned engines, softer suspension bushings and enough side pipe muffling to render them street driveable. These cars are identified by their serial numbers; term is not applicable to street cars retrofitted with competition features.

Salisbury

The type of the rear end center section/gear carrier used in all Cobras.

Scattershield

A cast steel or composite material bellhousing designed to contain exploding clutches and flywheels. Required safety equipment by most race sanctioning organizations. Shelby American sold an aftermarket "COBRA" scattershield for both big block and small block engines.

SCCA

Sports Car Club of America. Sanctioning body for most U.S. sports car racing in the 1960s.

Scuderia

Italian for "stable" or "horse stable." Used in racing to denote a group or team, such as "Scuderia Ferrari" or "Scuderia Filipinetti." [See "Ecurie"]

Sebring

Airport race circuit in central Florida famous for 12-hour sports car endurance races. Also refers to early Cobra competition model; 3 were built. Also used to describe close-ratio gears for Borg Warner 4-speed transmissions used in small-block competition Cobras.

Service Replacement

Term used to describe a factory part if a later year that, while cosmetically different from the original, is fully acceptable. An example would be in later years, when Ford carried a 1968 Mustang fuel cap as the service replacement for the original 1965 cap. Does not have the exact same appearance as the original part but functions the same.

Shelby American

The name of the company Carroll Shelby started in 1961, when he began building Cobras. First location was in Venice, California (1042 Princeton Dr, formerly Lance Reventlows Shop), 1962-1965. Moved to Los Angeles airport hangars (6501 West Imperial Highway) 1965-1967.

Shelby Automotive

The name of the company which was manufactured and sold 1968-1970 Shelby Mustangs. Business office was based in Livonia, Michigan when production moved to Los Angeles in 1967. The cars were actually assembled at the A.O. Smith in Ionia, MI.

Shelby Lettered

Aftermarket parts carrying the name "SHELBY" or "CS SHELBY," manufactured and marketed after 1967. When Shelby sold the name "COBRA" to Ford in 1967 the agreement stipulated that Shelby could not produce or sell items with the "COBRA" name on them, so his name was used on all aftermarket parts and accessories.

Shelby Unique

Any part on a production Shelby which was specially made for that application; was not used on any other car. For example, the steel wheels which were stranded on the 1965 GT350 were also used on Ford's Fairlane station wagon, so they were not "Shelby-unique." The 5-spoke "Shelby-Cragar" wheels which were optional on the 1965 GT350 were not used on any other vehicle, so they are said to be "Shelby-unique."

Showroom Literature

Original promotional items printed by the manufacturer and given away by dealers which pictured and described the various models and options They came in four basic categories: full color post cards; two color, single and double-sided specification sheets (called "spec sheets"); full color brochures or folders (single sheets folded to form multiple pages or containing individual pages which were stapled together); road test reprints (black & white reprints of magazine road tests, printed on single sheets and folded to form multiple pages).

Side Pipes

Exhaust pipes running along the side of the car and terminating ahead of the rear wheels (Cobra competition models); also used to describe exhaust pipes routed under the car but terminating ahead of the rear wheels (1965 GT350 street and competition models). Some Cobra street cars had this type of exhaust system, also.

Side Stripes

Narrow-wide-narrow side stripes used on Ford GTs. Also used on Shelby Mustangs with "GT350"or "GT500" identification; used on all Shelbys. Also called "Rocker Panel Stripes" on the 1965-1968 cars or "Shelby Stripes." Due to the GT40's English pedigree, they were usually called "sill stripes" or "sill lines" on these cars.

Slabside

Slang term used to describe street 260 and 289 Cobras. So named because of the flat, squared-off edges of the fender lips.

Slough

Town in Buckinghamshire, England where Ford Advanced Vehicles (and later J.W.A) was located and where GT40 production took place. Originally located on Yeovi; Road, later moved to Branbury Avenue. "Slough," "Bucks," "Yeovil" and "Branbury Avenue" all refer to GT40 production facilities in England.

Small Block

Refers to any of the Ford lightweight, 90 degree 221-260-289-302 cubic-inch displacement engines. Usually used to describe a car which could have had either a small block (GT350) or a big block (GT500). Also used to describe parts for these engines. [See "Big Block"]

Small Letter Intake

Cobra aluminum Hi-Rise 4V intake used on 1965 and early 1966 GT350. So-called because "COBRA" name cast into top/front was smaller than the letters cast into similar intake used on later 1966 and 1967 GT350s (letters are 3/8" high). Also referred to by its Shelby part number, "S1MS." [See "Large Letter Intake"]

Snorkels

Fiberglass air scoops riveted to the rear deck of LeMans MK IIs, protruding up above turbulent boundary layer of air flow and used to draw in cooling air to the rear brakes.

Space Frame

Vehicle construction technique used until the 1960s, consisting of an internal structure or skeleton which was then covered with a non-structural covering. Cobras are fabricated utilizing space frame construction.

Spats

Aluminum contour pieces added to the lower rear edge of early Cobra front fenders. FIA rules required a certain amount of the tire's tread to be covered by bodywork, and the Cobras body rolled under the chassis at the rocker panel, leaving too much of the front tire's tread exposed. An aluminum piece was fabricated and riveted to the body to solve this problem on early race cars. Later cars' fender flares took this rule into consideration, negating the need for these special pieces.

Splash Bucket

Round, spun aluminum funnel-shaped catch basin surrounding fuel filter on GT350 R-Model and notchback racers. Used to catch and drain spillage and/or overflow during fuel stops.

Spline

Refers to the splines on the inside end of rear axles, or on the output shaft of the transmission. Small block cars usually have 28-spline axles and output shafts.

Split Doors

Doors fitted to some GT40 Safir MK Vs where the upper portion of the doors (the section that forms the roof) may be removed to create a semi-roadster effect.

Spoiler

Aerodynamic body piece used to redirect air flow over and/or around car to provide high speed stability by adding downforce to rear wheels. Rear spoiler was first used on Cobra Daytona Coupe, later on GT40s (where it was sometimes called a ducktail.)

Sponson

Taken from marine use, when a portion of the ship's side protrudes from the hull (in a side-wheeler; the paddle wheels were carried by sponsons). In GT40 production, used to describe the section between the wheels which was actually an outward extension from the central chassis structure where the fuel bladders were carried.

Spyder

A car of open bodywork configuration, such as a GT40 roadster

Standard

Refers to the normal equipment used when building a car. Opposite of "Optional equipment."

STD

Abbreviation for "standard"; usually refers to the standard or original dimension, used to indicate that an engine block has not been bored out or a crankshaft has not been turned down.

Stewart Warner

Manufacturer of gauges and electric fuel pumps used on some Cobras and Shelbys

Stock

Unmodified. Also refers to factory specifications; the way a car was when it left the factory. Also called "Box-Stock."

Straight Exhaust

Exhaust routed from the headers without mufflers, used on competition cars.

Street Car

Refers to the model of a particular car which was intended to be used for everyday driving, as opposed to a "race car" or a "competition car" which was intended for racing only.

Sunburst Wheels

Aluminum 15"x7 1/2" wheels used on 427 Cobra street cars. So-named because the spokes which emanated from the center fanned out to the edges like a sunburst. Designed by Peter Brock and manufactured by Kelsey-Hayes, these wheels were produced because Shelby American could not obtain magnesium wheels from Halibrand in the quantities they required.

T

T/A Radial

Refers to BF Goodrich "Radial T/A" model high performance tire, commonly used replacement on Shelbys and Cobras.

T-10

Borg Warner T-10 4-speed transmission. Standard equipment on 289 Cobras and 1965-1966 GT350s. GT350s and 289 Cobras used aluminum case; later GT350s used cast iron case.

T-44

Type 44, Ford-designed transaxle based on big-block stock car components; developed for use on 427-engines MK II GT40s.

Tailshaft

Refers to rear transmission case, encasing output shaft. Made of different materials (cast iron or aluminum) and produced in different lengths for various car models.

Talbot

Small, Chrome bullet mirror made in England; original equipment on 427 Cobras (called a "Talbot Jr.") and some 1965-1966 GT350s.

Target

Round number circles, normally in colors contrasting to the car, which carry large numbers. Also called "meatball" or "roundel."

Tennant Panels

Supplier of replacement GT40 chassis. All original cars were constructed on Abbey Panels chassis.

Thirty-Over

Usually written numerically (i.e. ".030-over or +.030"); refers to the overbore of an engine in thousandths of an inch. Worn engine cylinders are usually bored out in increments of .005," usually starting at .010." Small blocks cannot be safely bored out more than .030" because the cylinder walls become too thin and as a result, the engines run hot.

Top-Loader

Ford four-speed transmission used on 427 Cobra and 1967-1970 Shelbys. Also specified in homologation papers as an option for GT350 R-Models and Mustang notchback racers (although none were factory installed). Stronger than the Borg Warner T-10 transmission. So-named because gears are loaded into the case through an opening in the top. T-10 gears are loaded through the side of the case. The T-10 is never referred to as a "side-loader."

T-Pan

Finned Cobra cast aluminum oil pan used on 1965-1966 GT350s. So-called because in cross-section it is shaped like an upside down "T." Has extra capacity (6.5-qt) and side baffles to keep oil from sloshing and moving away from the oil pump pick-up during hard cornering.

Tri-Y

Steel tubing exhaust headers used on some small-block Cobras and on 1965-1966 GT350s. So-called because tubes from front two and rear two cylinders join together forming a "Y"; those two tubes join together forming a third "Y".

Tunnelport

Head configuration where the intake ports are round (thus the name) in shape allowing them to be larger and, thus, flow more air. Pushrods are located in the center of the port, inside of a sealed tube so there are no vacuum leaks. In 1968 this was considered state-of-the-art.

Turbine Wheels

Magnesium wheels developed for Ford MK IVs at Sebring and LeMans in 1967. So named because the wheel design consisted of "turbine blades" emanating from a solid center. Designed to draw cooling air into the brake rotors and force hot air out through the back of the wheel

Turn-Key

Refers to a car that is ready to run; it requires nothing (you literally turn the key and drive away). Often used to describe a finished kit car.

Twin-Nostrils Spare Tire Cover

GT40 panel covering the spare tire in the nose; has two triangular air outlets. Fitted to original production GT40s; later replaced with fully-vented type. [See "Fully Vented Spare Tire Cover"]

U

USRRC

United States Road Racing Championship. SCCA series for sports cars, drivers and manufacturers in the mid-1960s. Also refers to a special competition model of the 289 Cobras; only 11 were produced.

V

Venice

Refers to original Shelby American facility in Venice, California (address: 1042 Princeton Dr.) where 260-289 Cobras and the first 250 1965 GT350s were built.

VGC

Classified advertising abbreviation for "very good condition." Tends to be subjective.

VIN

Vehicle Identification Number. The serial number on the car which is used for identification, title, and registration purposes. Cobras used their CSX numbers.

Vin Plate

The aluminum plate carrying the Cobra VIN; pop riveted to the footbox on Cobras after (approx.) car #2200

W

Waterneck

Aluminum junction used with Weber carburetor set-up; attaches to top radiator inlet at one end and two outlets on Weber intake manifold. Carries "COBRA" name cast onto it.

Webers

Italian-made Weber carburetor set-up used by Shelby on small block race Cobras and small block GT40s. Uses four down-draft two-barrel carburetors and a unique intake manifold. Manifolds made with a "COBRA", "SHELBY" or "FORD" lettering. Similar setup also used on 427 engine; made by Ford and Holman-Moody

Wet Sump

Normal engine oiling system where oil is carried in the oil pan when not moving through the engine's oil system. [See "Dry sump"]

Wide Ratio

4-speed transmission using 2.78 first gear ration. [See "Close ratio"]

Willow Springs

Race track east of Los Angeles where Shalby American tested competition vehicles.

Windsor

Ford engine assembly plant (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) making 351 engines. These engines share only similar displacement with the 351 engines built at Ford's Cleveland palnt. Called 351-W as opposed to 351-C.

Wishbone

Control arm (upper and lower) of an independent suspension vehicle. So named because of its triangular or "wishbone" shape, made of either welded tubing, forging, or in the case of high volume production cars, stamped sheet metal.

Worm-And-Sector

Original steering system used in the first 125 Cobra roadsters. Replaced by rack-and-pinion steering (in CSX2126 and all subsequent cars). Rack-and-pinion steering is more precise. [See "Rack-and-Pinion"]

X

Xlnt

Classified advertising shorthand for "excellent"

X-Member

The section of the 427 Cobra fram which braces the front suspension upright mounting points; so-called because it is shaped like an "X".

Z

ZF Transaxle

Combination transmission and rear axle housing used in rear engined cars. 5-speed transmission hung off the rear, behind the differential. cars. 5-speed transmission hung off the rear, behind the differential. Made in Germany; was stronger than the Colotti transaxle which it replaced in the Ford GTs. Shortened "ZF" name is, for some inexplicable reason, more commonly used than the manufacturer's full name, which is Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen.

Zyglow

Method of x-raying non-ferrous metal parts to check for cracks which cannot be seen by the naked eye. [See "Magnaflux"]
